About Mt. Oliver Pennsylvania

Located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania is the borough of Mount Oliver. The borough is completely surrounded by the city of Pittsburgh. The area was founded by Captian John Ormsby in 1769 after he was granted 249 acres in the southern hills along the Monongahela River. At the start of the 1800s, Mr. Ormsby started selling off plots of land in Mt. Oliver. Ninety-two years later Mt. Oliver became officially incorporated as a borough. In 1927 Pittsburgh attempted to annex Mt. Oliver after annexing all other boroughs in the area. The residents of Mt. Oliver resisted annexation and were able to stay an independent municipality, which is how the borough came to be completely surrounded by the city of Pittsburg.
